NFL Players Drafted into MLB
Since today is a Sunday and the Steelers have a big game tonight against the Baltimore Ravens, I thought it would be interesting to talk about some NFL players who were drafted into the MLB. Former Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward was drafted as an outfielder by the Marlins in the 73rd round of the 1994 MLB Draft. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was drafted as a catcher by the Expos in the 18th round of the 1995 MLB Draft. Another former Steelers wide receiver, Antwaan Randle El, was drafted by the Cubs in the 14th round of the 1997 Draft. Even though there are many more NFL players who were drafted into the MLB, there are some players who played in both leagues. Bo Jackson was an outfielder who spent eight seasons with the Royals, White Sox and Angels. Jackson played in 694 games and had a career batting average of .250 with 141 home runs and 415 runs batted in. Jackson, who was a 1989 All Star selection, also was a running back/fullback for the Raiders. In his four year career, Jackson played in 38 games and rushed for 2782 yards with 16 touchdowns. Deion Sanders spent nine MLB seasons with the Yankees, Braves, Reds, and Giants. In 641 games, Sanders hit .263 with 39 home runs and 168 runs batted in. On the flip side, Sanders was a wide receiver, kick returner, and defensive back for the Falcons, 49ers, Cowboys, Redskins, and Ravens. In 188 games, Sanders registered nine interceptions for touchdowns, one fumble recovery touchdown, three touchdown receptions, six punt return touchdowns, and three kick return touchdowns. Brian Jordan spent 15 MLB seasons with the Cardinals, Braves, Dodgers, and Rangers. In 1456 career games, Jordan hit .282 with 184 home runs and 821 runs batted in. Jordan, who was a 1999 All Star selection, was a defensive back for the Falcons. In 36 career games, had four sacks, five interceptions, four fumble recoveries, and two safeties. It is truly interesting to read about players who are multi-sport athletes.
