Pirates Extend Two Qualifying Offers
The Pirates extended qualifying offers to catcher Russell Martin and pitcher Francisco Liriano. If one or both players agree to the qualifying offer, the offer is worth $15.3 million for one year. Martin, 32 in February, has played 1163 games with the Dodgers, Yankees, and Pirates while recording a .259 batting average with 119 home runs and 540 runs batted in. Martin is also a three-time All Star and has won a Rawlings Gold Glove Award and a Silver Slugger Award. Liriano, 31, has pitched in 223 games with the Twins, White Sox, and Pirates. In his nine Major League seasons, Liriano has a career record of (76-72) with a 4.07 ERA. Liriano was a 2006 All Star selection as a member of the Minnesota Twins. It will be interesting to see if one or both of these players will be back with the Pirates in 2015.
