Pirates Sign Three to Minors Deals
The Pittsburgh Pirates signed outfielder Gorkys Hernandez, infielder Deibinson Romero, and catcher Sebastian Valle to minor league contracts with invitations to spring training. Hernandez, 27, split the 2012 season with the Pirates and the Miami Marlins. In 70 career games, he has a career batting average of .192 with three home runs and 13 runs batted in. Romero, 28, spent the 2014 season with the Rochester Red Wings, the Triple-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. In 123 games, he hit .265 with eight home runs and 45 runs batted in. Valle, 24, spent the 2014 season with the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. In 38 games, he hit .220 with four home runs and 22 runs batted in. He also threw out 10 of 24 attempted base stealers for a 42% success rate.
