Padres Sign Clint Barmes
The San Diego Padres signed infielder Clint Barmes to a one-year contract with an option for the 2016 season. Barmes, 36 in March, has played in 1088 career games with the Colorado Rockies, Houston Astros, and Pittsburgh Pirates. He has a career batting average of .246 with 86 home runs and 399 runs batted in.
This is a great move by the organization. Even though Barmes has a good glove, his lacking ability to hit for average has been an issue for him and the team. Jordy Mercer proved this past year that he is ready to take on the starting shortstop position for the time being. Finding a productive shortstop has been a major issue for the organization for many years, and releasing Barmes is the first step in a new direction for the team at shortstop.
