11/10/14
Veterans Day
Veterans Day occurs on November 11 of every year. It is a time for all Americans to honor those who have served our country and to remember the lives that were lost while on duty. Many men and women stand on guard everyday to keep America safe. I feel honored to live in a country where I am protected by great armed forces. To tie baseball into the subject, there have been many great baseball players who have served our country. Jackie Robinson was commissioned as a second lieutenant after he was drafted into the army in 1942. Chicago Cubs Hall of Fame infielder Ernie Banks served in the US Army during the Korean War. Hall of Famers Hank Greenberg and Bob Feller served during World War II. Joe DiMaggio served in the US Air Force from 1943-1946. Ted Williams joined the Navy in 1942. Willie Mays was drafted into the US Army to serve in the Korean War. There have been many baseball heroes who have doubled as American heroes. Thank you to all who have served us and to all who serve us now.
