On Sunday, I talked about MLB players who also played football and NFL players who were drafted into the MLB. Since hockey is my second favorite sport, I decided to talk about MLB players who have played hockey. 2014 Hall of Fame inductee Tom Glavine pitched 22 Major League seasons with the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets. In his career, Glavine compiled a career record of (305-203) with a 3.54 ERA. Glavine threw 56 complete games with 25 of them being shutouts. Glavine was a ten-time All Star, won two Cy Young Awards, and won four Silver Slugger Awards in his career. While Glavine is famous for his baseball career, Glavine was drafted in the fourth round of the 1984 NHL Draft by the Los Angeles Kings. Jamie Hoffman was an outfielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 16 career games, Hoffman has a career batting average of .154 with one home run and seven runs batted in. Even though Hoffman was signed as an undrafted free agent into the MLB, Hoffman was drafted in the eighth round of the 2003 NHL Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes. Outfielder Nyjer Morgan has played 598 games for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Washington Nationals, Milwaukee Brewers, and Cleveland Indians. In his career, Morgan has a batting average of .282 with 12 home runs and 136 runs batted in. Even though Morgan has played baseball as a professional sport, Morgan used to play for the Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League. Morgan was also invited to participate in a practice with the San Jose Sharks. Justin Morneau, a first baseman from New Westminster, British Columbia, has played 1438 games with the Minnesota Twins, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Colorado Rockies. In his career, Morneau has a career batting average of .281 with 238 home runs and 945 runs batted in. Morneau is also a four-time All Star, a two-time Silver Slugger Award winner, and was the 2006 American League MVP. Even though Morneau has had a successful Major League career, he played goaltender as a child and has played in one preseason game for the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League. In my opinion, it is very interesting to find out about players who have played multiple sports.
