Pirates Update
The Texas Rangers have hired Pirates bench coach Jeff Banister as their new manager. Banister had spent 29 years with the Pirates organization. He even made one career plate appearance as a member of the Pirates. Banister beat out Rangers interim manager Tim Bogar and Cleveland Indians bullpen catcher Kevin Cash to become the new skipper. The Pirates will have to look for a new bench coach for the 2015 season.
The Pirates announced that they will extend a qualifying offer to catcher Russell Martin. The offer will be worth $15.3 million dollars. Russell Martin made a big impact on the Pirates. He has been a vocal leader and has made his presence felt in nearly every game in his two seasons in Pittsburgh. Martin, who will be 32 in March, has played in 1163 regular season games with the Dodgers, Yankees, and Pirates. He has also been selected three times to the All Star Game and has won a Rawlings Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger Award.
