Toronto Blue Jays Update
The Toronto Blue Jays have claimed outfielder Andy Dirks off waivers from the Detroit Tigers. Dirks, 29 in January, missed the entire 2014 season due to a back injury. In three Major League seasons with the Tigers, Dirks has recorded a .276 batting average with 24 home runs and 100 runs batted in. The Blue Jays have also signed pitcher Jeff Francis to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. The Canadian lefty spent time with the Cincinnati Reds, Oakland Athletics, and New York Yankees in the 2014 season. In 11 games pitched with the three organizations, Francis compiled a combined record of (1-1) with a 6.00 ERA and one save.
