Pirates News

Pirates announced that they have re-signed four minor league players and released eight. They have re-signed pitchers Collin Balester, Marek Minarik, and Tyler Sample and outfielder Junior Sosa. Out of the eight players the Pirates released, the most significant was first baseman Matt Curry. Curry was once considered a top first base product, but his past few seasons have been plagued by injury. Besides these minor league transactions, infielder Michael Martinez has elected free agency. Martinez appeared in 26 games for the Pirates during the 2014 season. He was only able to muster five hits in 39 at bats. On another note, Pirates manager Clint Hurdle underwent right hip replacement surgery this morning and is expected to make a full recovery.
