Cubs Claim Two, Sign David Ross

The Chicago Cubs claimed outfielder Shane Peterson off waivers from the Oakland Athletics and catcher Ryan Lavarnway off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers. Peterson, 27 in February, made his Major League debut with the Athletics in 2013. In two games, he hit .143 with no home runs and one run batted in. Lavarnway, 27, has played in 97 career games for the Boston Red Sox. He has a career batting average of .201 with five home runs and 34 runs batted in. The Cubs also signed catcher David Ross to a two-year contract worth $5 million. Ross, 38 in March, has played in 744 career games for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Pittsburgh Pirates, San Diego Padres, Cincinnati Reds, Boston Red Sox, and Atlanta Braves. He has a career batting average of .233 with 95 home runs and 273 runs batted in.
