Padres Acquire Justin Upton in Six-Player Trade

The San Diego Padres acquired outfielder Justin Upton and pitcher Aaron Northcraft from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for pitcher Max Fried, infielders Jace Peterson and Dustin Peterson, outfielder Mallex Smith, and international bonus compensation. Upton, 27, has played in 1034 career games for the Diamondbacks and Braves. He has a career batting average of .274 with 164 home runs and 535 runs batted in. He is a two-time All Star and a two-time Silver Slugger Award winner. Northcraft, 24, split the 2014 season with Double-A Mississippi and Triple-A Gwinnett. In 26 games, he compiled a record of (7-10) with a 4.70 ERA. Fried, 21 in January, split the 2014 season with the Arizona League Padres and Class-A Fort Wayne. In five games, he compiled a record of (0-1) with a 5.06 ERA. Jace Peterson, 24, made his Major League debut for the Padres in 2014. In 27 games, he hit .113 with no home runs or runs batted in. Dustin Peterson, 20, spent the 2014 season with Class-A Fort Wayne. In 126 games, he hit .233 with 10 home runs and 79 runs batted in. Smith, 21, split the 2014 season with Class-A Fort Wayne and Class-A Lake Elsinore. In 120 games, he hit .310 with five home runs and 31 runs batted in.
